I'm watching Return of the King, and in the spirit of Peter Jackson's making this a story about Aragorn rather than a story about the hobbits, I think the story is actually about Aragorn avoiding female entanglements.

"Crap, Gandalf made me come to Rivendell. Um, Arwen, you're elvish - you can't be with me."
"Oh you don't mind? Well, um, I'm going on a hopeless quest into certain doom in the South. No place for a lady like you."
"Sorry Eowyn I've got this elvish lady up North - I'm no good for you."
"Hmm I keep surviving these battles, and Arwen's father is even helping me by bringing Narsil. Maybe I'll try the crevice that no one ever returns from."
"Nope ghost army saved me again. I know, march on Mordor! That'll do the trick!"
"Dangit Arwen ambushed me in public. I'm doomed."
